English

The present study aimed to predict maladaptive and aggressive behaviors in children aged 4–6 years based on communication skills and separation anxiety symptoms. This research employed a descriptive–correlational design. The statistical population consisted of all children aged 4–6 years in District 5 of Tehran in 2025, with their mothers participating as respondents. A sample of 200 children was selected using cluster random sampling. Data were collected using the Miller Preschool Social–Emotional Skills Screening Questionnaire (1997) and the Nelson Children’s Aggression Questionnaire (2000). Data analysis was conducted using correlation and regression statistical methods. The results indicated that communication skills and separation anxiety symptoms significantly predicted maladaptive and aggressive behaviors in children. Communication skills were significantly associated with a reduction in aggressive behaviors and an increase in adaptive behaviors, whereas separation anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with an increase in aggressive and maladaptive behaviors. The findings suggest that communication skills within family and educational contexts can function as a protective factor against the emergence of behavioral problems in preschool children. In contrast, separation anxiety—particularly in children who receive less emotional support—is associated with more negative behavioral outcomes. These results can be utilized in the design of preventive interventions and educational programs for parents, preschool educators, and child psychology professionals.
