Religious identity, as a fundamental dimension of personal identity, undergoes profound challenges and transformations during adolescence. In this context, self-awareness, as an inner and reflective process, may play a decisive role in either the stability or fragility of adolescents’ religious identity. The present study aimed to explore adolescents’ lived experiences of the role of self-awareness in the stability of their religious identity. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach within the framework of descriptive phenomenology, and data were analyzed through Colaizzi’s seven-step method. The participants consisted of fourteen adolescents aged 12-18 residing in Tehran in 2025, who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews. Following in-depth data analysis, five main themes and twenty-five subthemes were extracted. The findings indicated that self-awareness plays a central role in adolescents’ transition from an ascribed religious identity to an exploratory religious identity, strengthens their internal coherence and integration, provides a meaningful and purposeful experience of life, enhances faith-based resilience in the face of crises, and deepens religious experiences as well as the quality of worship practices. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that fostering self-awareness within educational, familial, and developmental contexts can contribute to the formation of a stable, internalized, and meaningful religious identity in adolescents. These results have important implications for educational planning, counseling practices, and psychological interventions in the field of adolescent development.
