Facing rapid social, cultural, and technological transformations, parenting styles in Iran are encountering significant challenges that necessitate sociological reconsideration. This study aims to explore alternative futures of parenting styles in Iran by employing the Causal Layered Analysis (CLA) approach. Through examining the four layers of litany, social causes, discourse, and myth/metaphor, the research outlines diverse future scenarios of child-rearing in the Iranian context. The findings reveal that current parenting styles are marked by discontinuities at individual, familial, and structural levels and are shaped by factors such as economic pressures, intergenerational value gaps, competing discourses (including official Islamism, individualistic modernity, and neoliberal child-rearing), and dominant cultural metaphors such as “a child must be raised with the rigor of gold.” The study argues that only through revisiting dominant discourses, strengthening supportive institutions, promoting conscious and informed parenting, and reconstructing foundational metaphors of child-rearing can desirable scenarios—such as a tolerant, creative, and resilient society—be achieved. This research offers an innovative approach to educational futures studies that can inform transformative policymaking within Iran’s child-rearing and educational systems.
