Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of reading self-compassion books in reducing washing urges and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in adolescents with OCD. Method: This research was an experimental single-subject study. One participant was purposefully selected from a population of adolescents with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The participant completed the Maudsley Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (MOCI), and book-reading sessions were conducted for one month, four hours per week. During the intervention, four chapters of the book, comprising ten main sections, were provided to the participant. Results: The findings indicated that reading self-compassion books had a significant impact on the subscales of checking, washing, doubt, and conscientiousness, as well as a notable effect on the overall OCD score, leading to substantial improvement across various dimensions. A significant difference was observed between pre-test and post-test scores. Therefore, reading self-compassion books demonstrated the positive effect of this intervention in reducing OCD symptoms. The overall improvement rate in OCD scores was 68%, and the effect size was calculated at 41%. The findings suggest that this intervention was an effective method for reducing OCD symptoms (t(2) = 16.0, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the study’s findings, reading self-compassion books can significantly improve the dimensions of checking, washing, doubt, and conscientiousness, but it had less impact on the slowness and repetition dimension. However, further research with control groups and larger sample sizes is necessary.
